{"id":107279,"date":"2025-04-24T19:28:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T18:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/helloproject.es\/vigilancia\/emplean-fibra-optica-para-monitorizar-la-actividad-de-volcanes-en-islandia\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T19:28:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T18:28:22","slug":"emplean-fibra-optica-para-monitorizar-la-actividad-de-volcanes-en-islandia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helloproject.es\/vigilancia\/emplean-fibra-optica-para-monitorizar-la-actividad-de-volcanes-en-islandia\/","title":{"rendered":"Emplean fibra \u00f3ptica para monitorizar la actividad de volcanes en Islandia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Un equipo internacional, liderado por Jiaxuan Li del Instituto de Tecnolog\u00eda de California, en Estados Unidos, emplea un cable de fibra \u00f3ptica para medir con detalle y de forma casi simult\u00e1nea movimientos de lava en el sistema volc\u00e1nico de Svartsengi, en la pen\u00ednsula de Reykjanes (Islandia).<\/p>\n<p>Para ello, utilizaron una tecnolog\u00eda emergente con detecci\u00f3n ac\u00fastica distribuida (en espa\u00f1ol, DAS) que les ayud\u00f3 a convertir los cables de telecomunicaciones en una red de sensores capaz de detectar cambios en el terreno.<\/p>\n<p>Durante su investigaci\u00f3n, publicada en la revista Science, el equipo cient\u00edfico registr\u00f3 nueve eventos de intrusi\u00f3n de magma de diques volc\u00e1nicos en un a\u00f1o. Estos fen\u00f3menos geol\u00f3gicos son\u00a0movimientos de lava en el interior de la capa terrestre que no llegan a salir a la superficie.<\/p>\n<p>El equipo cient\u00edfico registr\u00f3 nueve eventos de intrusi\u00f3n de magma de diques volc\u00e1nicos en un a\u00f1o<\/p>\n<p>De estos eventos, seis llegaron a ser erupciones de fisuras, es decir grietas por las que brota magma al exterior; y tres se detuvieron antes de alcanzar la superficie.<\/p>\n<p>La primera erupci\u00f3n ocurri\u00f3 el 18 de diciembre de 2023 con fisuras que se extendieron un kil\u00f3metro desde los cr\u00e1teres de Sundh\u00fakur, al norte de St\u00f3ra- Skogfell. En cambio, la segunda se produjo cerca de Grindav\u00edk, donde destruy\u00f3 varias viviendas a su paso y avanz\u00f3 hasta el monte Hagafell.<\/p>\n<p>El resto de los eventos magm\u00e1ticos se mantuvieron en las zonas que se analizaron y no avanzaron mucho, salvo el \u00faltimo registrado, que se extendi\u00f3 dos kil\u00f3metros al norte de St\u00f3ra- Skogfell.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Cien kil\u00f3metros de sensores<\/h2>\n<p>Los investigadores desplegaron un sistema de monitoreo con un cable de fibra \u00f3ptica de 100 kil\u00f3metros y lo convirtieron en una matriz de sensores con m\u00e1s de 10 .000 canales de grabaci\u00f3n en la ciudad de Keflav\u00edk.<\/p>\n<p>La tecnolog\u00eda utilizada les permiti\u00f3 detectar patrones de deformaci\u00f3n \u2014cambio\u00a0en la posici\u00f3n del terreno\u2014 para cada evento volc\u00e1nico. Esto mostr\u00f3 que la tasa de crecimiento de los diques alcanzaba su punto m\u00e1ximo entre 15 y 22 minutos antes del inicio de cada erupci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La combinaci\u00f3n de cables de fibra \u00f3ptica con los sistemas cl\u00e1sicos podr\u00eda abrir nuevas posibilidades de estudio de la actividad magm\u00e1tica<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan los autores, la DAS de baja frecuencia requiere procesamiento m\u00ednimo, por lo que es \u00f3ptima para la alerta temprana y monitoreo en tiempo real del suelo terrestre.<\/p>\n<p>De hecho, desde el 27 de febrero de 2024, el equipo de Li instal\u00f3 un sistema de alerta temprana en colaboraci\u00f3n con la Oficina Meteorol\u00f3gica de Islandia (IMO, por sus siglas en island\u00e9s).<\/p>\n<p>Aunque las t\u00e9cnicas cl\u00e1sicas siguen siendo necesarias, la combinaci\u00f3n con cables de fibra \u00f3ptica podr\u00eda abrir nuevas posibilidades de estudio de la actividad magm\u00e1tica como es el desplazamiento de fallas y deformaciones de laderas.<\/p>\n<p>Referencia:<\/p>\n<p>Jiaxuan Li. et al.
