El t\u00e9rmino \u2018covid persistente\u2019, reconocido oficialmente por la Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud, describe s\u00edntomas que se mantienen durante meses tras superar la fase aguda de una infecci\u00f3n por coronavirus. Esta condici\u00f3n es una preocupaci\u00f3n creciente a nivel mundial y puede presentar s\u00edntomas como problemas respiratorios, fatiga y alteraciones cognitivas.<\/p>\n

Es el primer estudio de genoma completo centrado en la covid persistente<\/p>\n

Ahora, un estudio publicado en Nature Genetics\u00a0ha identificado la primera asociaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica significativa a nivel de todo el genoma para la covid persistente, localizada en el gen\u00a0FOXP4.\u00a0<\/p>\n

La investigaci\u00f3n\u00a0se enmarca en el consorcio COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative, que ha llevado a cabo el primer estudio del genoma completo centrado espec\u00edficamente en esta dolencia.<\/p>\n

El an\u00e1lisis se ha realizado con datos de la cohorte COVICAT y GCAT, coordinada por el Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Germans Trias i Pujol (IGTP). Tambi\u00e9n han colaborado\u00a0el Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal).<\/p>\n

Estudio de m\u00e1s de 6 000 personas<\/h2>\n

La investigaci\u00f3n ha incluido 6 450 personas diagnosticadas con covid persistente y m\u00e1s de un mill\u00f3n de controles de 16 pa\u00edses.<\/p>\n

Los resultados sugieren que la relaci\u00f3n entre el gen FOXP4 y la covid persistente est\u00e1 estrechamente vinculada a la funci\u00f3n pulmonar y a la respuesta inmunitaria frente a las infecciones. Adem\u00e1s, los investigadores han hallado una fuerte relaci\u00f3n entre los casos graves de covid y el desarrollo de covid persistente, en l\u00ednea con estudios anteriores.<\/p>\n

Pero, \u00bftodas las variantes gen\u00e9ticas que aumentan el riesgo de sufrir covid grave tambi\u00e9n incrementan el riesgo de covid persistente? No necesariamente. El estudio ha observado que, aunque la mayor\u00eda de las variantes gen\u00e9ticas afectan a la respuesta al virus o a la gravedad de la enfermedad, las relacionadas con el gen FOXP4 parecen tener un papel m\u00e1s destacado en el desarrollo de la covid persistente. Esto se\u00f1ala factores biol\u00f3gicos clave vinculados a la salud pulmonar y la respuesta del sistema inmunitario.<\/p>\n

Rafael De Cid, director cient\u00edfico del proyecto GCAT en el IGTP y uno de los autores del estudio, destaca que \u201clos resultados permitir\u00e1n categorizar mejor los factores de riesgo de la covid persistente, una condici\u00f3n compleja moldeada tanto por factores de riesgo (la gravedad de la enfermedad, enfermedades cr\u00f3nicas u obesidad) como por factores protectores, como la vacunaci\u00f3n, el descanso o el ejercicio f\u00edsico\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTodos ellos influyen en la persistencia de los s\u00edntomas y su variabilidad, incluyendo diferencias por sexo. Su an\u00e1lisis en estudios futuros ayudar\u00e1 a definir subtipos y avanzar hacia estrategias personalizadas de prevenci\u00f3n y tratamiento\u201d, a\u00f1ade.<\/p>\n

La covid persistente sigue siendo una enfermedad compleja con s\u00edntomas muy variados. Aunque se necesita m\u00e1s investigaci\u00f3n para comprender sus mecanismos, este estudio aporta evidencia gen\u00e9tica sobre el papel fundamental que la salud pulmonar podr\u00eda tener en su evoluci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
