La genetista fue propuesta por Peter Greenberg, galardonado en 2023, con el respaldo de Gene E. Robinson, director del Instituto de Biolog\u00eda Gen\u00f3mica Carl R. Woese de la Universidad de Illinois (EE. UU.).<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Descubrimiento clave en c\u00e1ncer de mama<\/h2>\n<p>Mary-Claire King (Chicago, 1946) se licenci\u00f3 en Matem\u00e1ticas en el Carleton College en 1966 y realiz\u00f3 su doctorado en Gen\u00e9tica en la Universidad de Berkeley (EE UU), bajo la direcci\u00f3n de Allan Wilson. Posteriormente, trabaj\u00f3 como investigadora posdoctoral en San Francisco y como profesora en Berkeley, antes de incorporarse en 1995 a la Universidad de Washington y al Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, donde contin\u00faa su labor.<\/p>\n<p>Identific\u00f3 en 1990 el gen BRCA1, clave en algunos c\u00e1nceres de mama y ovario, lo que transform\u00f3 la comprensi\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica de la enfermedad<\/p>\n<p>Su trabajo en\u00a0biolog\u00eda evolutiva ya result\u00f3 clave al demostrar la similitud gen\u00e9tica del 99 % entre humanos y chimpanc\u00e9s mediante an\u00e1lisis estad\u00edsticos de prote\u00ednas. En 1974 comenz\u00f3 a investigar el origen del c\u00e1ncer de mama en el equipo del Dr. Petrakis. En 1990 logr\u00f3 identificar el\u00a0gen BRCA1, ubicado en el\u00a0cromosoma 17, y su relaci\u00f3n con ciertos tipos de c\u00e1ncer de mama y ovario. Este descubrimiento supuso un cambio radical en la comprensi\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer, hasta entonces no asociado a causas gen\u00e9ticas.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de entonces, King contribuy\u00f3 a reorientar la investigaci\u00f3n de enfermedades como la fibrosis qu\u00edstica o la enfermedad de Huntington desde la perspectiva de la gen\u00e9tica.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Gen\u00e9tica y derechos humanos<\/h2>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s de su trayectoria cient\u00edfica, King ha destacado por su compromiso con los derechos humanos. Desarroll\u00f3 el \u00edndice de abuelidad, herramienta gen\u00e9tica que permiti\u00f3 identificar a hijos de desaparecidos durante la dictadura argentina. Gracias a su trabajo con las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, se cre\u00f3 el Banco Nacional de Datos Gen\u00e9ticos, pionero en preservar sistem\u00e1ticamente informaci\u00f3n para futuras identificaciones. Su labor ha contribuido a la reunificaci\u00f3n de al menos 138 familias.<\/p>\n<p>Con con las\u00a0Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, desarroll\u00f3 el \u00edndice de abuelidad, herramienta gen\u00e9tica\u00a0clave para identificar a hijos de desaparecidos en Argentina y reunir al menos 138 familias<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1s recientemente, ha realizado aportes fundamentales al estudio de la esquizofrenia, al identificar mutaciones de novo que alteran genes implicados en la neurog\u00e9nesis durante el desarrollo fetal, integrando gen\u00f3mica y neurociencia para avanzar en el conocimiento de su origen y posibles tratamientos.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan la base de datos Scopus, cuenta con 349 publicaciones cient\u00edficas, m\u00e1s de 48 000 citas y un \u00edndice h de 106.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Reconocimientos<\/h2>\n<p>King es doctora honoris causa por m\u00e1s de 20 universidades y miembro de instituciones como la Academia Nacional de Medicina y la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de EE UU Ha presidido la Sociedad Estadounidense de Gen\u00e9tica Humana y colaborado con organismos internacionales como la OMS.<\/p>\n<p>Ha presidido la Sociedad Estadounidense de Gen\u00e9tica Humana y colaborado con organismos internacionales como la OMS<\/p>\n<p>Entre los numerosos galardones que ha recibido destacan la Medalla de la Universidad de California (2004), el premio Mujeres y Ciencia del Instituto Weizmann (2006), el Lasker-Koshland de Investigaci\u00f3n M\u00e9dica (2014), la Medalla Nacional de Ciencias de EE UU (2016), el Premio Shaw en Ciencias de la Vida y Medicina (2018), la Medalla Mendel (2018), el Premio Internacional Gairdner (2021) y la Public Welfare Medal de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de EE. UU. (2025).<\/p>\n<p>El jurado estuvo presidido por\u00a0Pedro Miguel Echenique Landir\u00edbar\u00a0e integrado por destacadas figuras de la ciencia y la divulgaci\u00f3n, entre ellas\u00a0Juan Luis Arsuaga,\u00a0Avelino Corma,\u00a0Rosa Men\u00e9ndez,\u00a0Gin\u00e9s Morata,\u00a0Erika Pastrana\u00a0o\u00a0Manuel Toharia, quien actu\u00f3 como secretario.<\/p>\n<p>El acto de entrega se celebrar\u00e1 en octubre en Oviedo, presidido por los Reyes de Espa\u00f1a y con la presencia de la Princesa de Asturias y la Infanta Sof\u00eda.
