Parece algo lejano, pero si alg\u00fan d\u00eda los seres humanos quieren vivir en otros planetas necesitar\u00e1n construir espacios habitables, donde tambi\u00e9n puedan sobrevivir plantas. Eso s\u00ed, transportar suficiente material industrial para crear estos h\u00e1bitats es complicado. Por eso, investigadores de la Escuela John A. Paulson de Ingenier\u00eda y Ciencias Aplicadas de Harvard (SEAS, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) en Estados Unidos han creado una alternativa usando la biolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n

El equipo investigador ha demostrado que puede cultivar algas verdes en condiciones similares a las de Marte en el interior de refugios de biopl\u00e1sticos que fabrican las propias algas. Los detalles del trabajo se publican esta semana en Science Advances.<\/p>\n

\u201cEsta tecnolog\u00eda es una soluci\u00f3n sostenible para permitir el crecimiento de plantas que sustenten la vida en otros planetas o en entornos de baja presi\u00f3n como la Luna\u201d, se\u00f1ala a SINC Rafid Quayum, investigador del centro estadounidense y uno de los autores del art\u00edculo.<\/p>\n

Adem\u00e1s, este h\u00e1bitat ser\u00eda lo que se denomina un \u2018bucle cerrado\u2019. \u201cSi un h\u00e1bitat est\u00e1 compuesto de biopl\u00e1stico y en \u00e9l crecen algas, estas pueden producir m\u00e1s biopl\u00e1stico\u201d, explica en un comunicado Robin Wordsworth, autor principal. \u201cAs\u00ed empiezas a tener un sistema de bucle cerrado que puede sostenerse a s\u00ed mismo e incluso crecer con el tiempo\u201d.<\/p>\n

As\u00ed, estos experimentos constituyen un primer paso hacia el dise\u00f1o de h\u00e1bitats sostenibles en el espacio que apenas requiera traer materiales de la Tierra.<\/p>\n

Algas en atm\u00f3sfera de Marte<\/h2>\n

En el experimento, el equipo recre\u00f3 la atm\u00f3sfera de Marte y cultiv\u00f3 un tipo com\u00fan de alga verde, Dunaliella tertiolecta. Las algas crecieron dentro de una c\u00e1mara de crecimiento impresa en 3D y fabricada con un biopl\u00e1stico llamado \u00e1cido polil\u00e1ctico.<\/p>\n

Las algas se mantuvieron a una presi\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica similar a la de Marte, 600 pascales \u2014m\u00e1s de 100 veces inferior a la de la Tierra\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cEn este sistema, los biopl\u00e1sticos estabilizan la presi\u00f3n y pueden bloquear la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta a la vez que transmiten luz visible, lo que permite que las algas puedan hacer la fotos\u00edntesis\u201d, explica Quayum.<\/p>\n

Las algas se mantuvieron a una presi\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica similar a la de Marte, 600 pascales \u2014m\u00e1s de 100 veces inferior a la de la Tierra\u2014 y en un entorno rico en di\u00f3xido de carbono, en lugar de nitr\u00f3geno y ox\u00edgeno como en la Tierra. El agua l\u00edquida no puede existir a presiones tan bajas, pero la c\u00e1mara de biopl\u00e1stico cre\u00f3 un gradiente de presi\u00f3n que estabiliz\u00f3 el agua en su interior.<\/p>\n

El mismo equipo investigador ya cre\u00f3 en 2019<\/a> un tipo de estructura de l\u00e1minas de aerogeles de s\u00edlice que imitan el efecto invernadero de la Tierra para permitir el crecimiento biol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n

Una combinaci\u00f3n de los experimentos con algas y los aerogeles resolver\u00eda los problemas de temperatura y presi\u00f3n para el crecimiento de plantas y algas, seg\u00fan Wordsworth, y allanar el camino hacia la existencia extraterrestre.<\/p>\n

\u201cNuestros pr\u00f3ximos pasos consistir\u00e1n en ampliar nuestro estudio para examinar otros materiales que podr\u00edan utilizarse para generar h\u00e1bitats en Marte y realizar pruebas en condiciones m\u00e1s realistas\u201d, concluye Quayum.<\/p>\n
