As\u00ed lo confirma un estudio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41593-025-02008-y\" target=\"_blank\">publicado<\/a>\u00a0en la revista Nature Neuroscience, que emplea realidad virtual y t\u00e9cnicas combinadas de neuroimagen, fisiolog\u00eda y an\u00e1lisis computacionales.<\/p>\n<p>248 adultos interactuaron en realidad virtual con avatares sanos y con signos de enfermedad para estudiar la respuesta del cerebro y del sistema inmunitario<\/p>\n<p>El trabajo fue dirigido por Andrea Serino, profesor de Neurociencias Cl\u00ednicas en el Hospital Universitario de Lausana (Suiza), donde lidera el MySpace Lab, y cuenta con la participaci\u00f3n de Camilla Jandus, especialista en inmunolog\u00eda y neurofisiolog\u00eda en la Universidad de Lausana y el Hospital Universitario de Ginebra.<\/p>\n<p>El experimento involucr\u00f3 a 248 adultos j\u00f3venes sanos que interactuaron en un\u00a0entorno virtual con avatares humanos, algunos con signos visibles de enfermedad (erupciones, tos) y otros con expresiones neutras o de miedo. Cuando aquellos avatares enfermos penetraban el espacio peripersonal \u2014la zona inmediata al cuerpo\u2014 los participantes mostraron mayor sensibilidad t\u00e1ctil y\u00a0activaci\u00f3n del sistema cerebral encargado de detectar amenazas cercanas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNos preguntamos si respuestas neuronales anticipatorias podr\u00edan detectar infecciones potenciales y alertar al sistema inmunitario, prepar\u00e1ndolo para actuar\u201d, explican los autores en el estudio. \u201cEn el trabajo mostramos que el posible contacto con avatares infecciosos que invaden el espacio peripersonal es anticipado por\u00a0\u00e1reas multisensoriales y motoras del cerebro, y activa la red de saliencia\u201d,\u00a0una red neural que se encarga de determinar la importancia de est\u00edmulos internos y externos.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>La amenaza virtual es suficiente<\/h2>\n<p>Las t\u00e9cnicas de electroencefalograf\u00eda (EEG) y resonancia magn\u00e9tica funcional por im\u00e1genes (fMRI) revelaron una activaci\u00f3n diferencial del cerebro frente a los avatares con s\u00edntomas infecciosos respecto a los neutros o temerosos. Al mismo tiempo, los an\u00e1lisis de sangre detectaron un incremento en la actividad de c\u00e9lulas linfoides innatas (ILC), clave en la inmunidad inmediata. Esta respuesta fue comparable a la generada por una vacuna contra la gripe real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNuestros an\u00e1lisis conductuales, neurofisiol\u00f3gicos, inmunol\u00f3gicos y computacionales demuestran que amenazas infecciosas potenciales \u2014incluso presentadas en realidad virtual\u2014 son procesadas por el sistema del espacio peripersonal y la red de saliencia de forma anticipatoria, y reactivan el sistema inmunitario desencadenando respuestas de c\u00e9lulas ILC\u201d sostienen los investigadores.<\/p>\n<p>Detectar a tiempo situaciones potencialmente infecciosas permite al cerebro decidir estrategias de evitaci\u00f3n o activar las defensas<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan los autores, esta interacci\u00f3n refleja un mecanismo evolutivo del llamado \u201csistema inmunitario conductual\u201d, que promueve respuestas r\u00e1pidas ante se\u00f1ales de enfermedad visual, incluso si eso conlleva falsos positivos, comparado con el principio del \u201cdetector de humo\u201d. Se\u00f1alan que detectar a tiempo situaciones potencialmente infecciosas permite decidir estrategias de evitaci\u00f3n \u2014como el distanciamiento social\u2014 o activar defensas inmunol\u00f3gicas de forma inmediata.<\/p>\n<p>Este estudio tambi\u00e9n extiende el papel de las defensas conductuales, tradicionalmente asociadas al comportamiento social, al plano biol\u00f3gico fisiol\u00f3gico.
