De forma parecida a la\u00a0\u2018caja negra\u2019\u00a0de un avi\u00f3n, que registra datos del vuelo como el origen, la direcci\u00f3n y la velocidad, los investigadores han descubierto que la trayectoria evolutiva del c\u00e1ncer est\u00e1 codificada en el epigenoma. En concreto, se encuentra en un tipo especial de marca epigen\u00e9tica conocida como metilaci\u00f3n fluctuante.<\/p>\n<p>La c\u00e9lula original que dio lugar al tumor deja una firma \u00fanica de metilaci\u00f3n<\/p>\n<p>Hasta ahora, la metilaci\u00f3n se entend\u00eda principalmente como un\u00a0interruptor que activa o desactiva genes. Sin embargo, el nuevo trabajo demuestra que cumple una funci\u00f3n adicional: la c\u00e9lula original que dio lugar al tumor deja una firma \u00fanica de metilaci\u00f3n. Esta huella no solo revela la identidad de las c\u00e9lulas tumorales, sino que tambi\u00e9n cambia a medida que el tumor crece y se diversifica.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Modelos matem\u00e1ticos<\/h2>\n<p>Gracias a modelos matem\u00e1ticos avanzados, el equipo logr\u00f3 descifrar estos patrones de metilaci\u00f3n y reconstruir tanto el origen como la evoluci\u00f3n del tumor con una precisi\u00f3n in\u00e9dita, lo que tambi\u00e9n permite predecir su desarrollo futuro.<\/p>\n<p>El algoritmo, denominado EVOFLUx, se aplic\u00f3 a 2 000 muestras de pacientes con distintos tipos de leucemias y linfomas. \u201cReanalizamos datos epigen\u00e9ticos antiguos desde una perspectiva completamente nueva\u201d, comenta Calum Gabbutt, del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n del C\u00e1ncer de Londres. \u201cLo que antes consider\u00e1bamos ruido de fondo, ahora revelaba la historia evolutiva del c\u00e1ncer\u201d, a\u00f1ade Mart\u00ed Dur\u00e1n-Ferrer, del IDIBAPS.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Esta herramienta permite reconstruir cu\u00e1ndo surgi\u00f3 el tumor, c\u00f3mo ha crecido y si ha generado diversidad celular, con implicaciones cl\u00ednicas relevantes<\/p>\n<p>I\u00f1aki Mart\u00edn-Subero (IDIBAPS)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEsta nueva herramienta nos permite leer la historia pasada del c\u00e1ncer y conocer cu\u00e1ndo se origin\u00f3 el tumor, a qu\u00e9 velocidad ha ido creciendo y si ha creado diversidad celular. Esto no solo es importante para entender mejor la biolog\u00eda del c\u00e1ncer, sino que tambi\u00e9n tiene aplicaciones cl\u00ednicas\u201d, subraya I\u00f1aki Mart\u00edn-Subero, investigador ICREA en el IDIBAPS y coordinador del estudio.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Anticipar la progresi\u00f3n cl\u00ednica<\/h2>\n<p>El estudio parti\u00f3 de la hip\u00f3tesis de que conocer el pasado de un c\u00e1ncer permite anticipar su futuro cl\u00ednico. Para ello, se analizaron muestras de pacientes con c\u00e1nceres linfoides, incluidas leucemias pedi\u00e1tricas como la leucemia linfobl\u00e1stica aguda y enfermedades de adultos como la leucemia linf\u00e1tica cr\u00f3nica.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Aunque en este estudio analizamos leucemias y linfomas, creemos que esta metodolog\u00eda podr\u00eda aplicarse a todos los tipos de c\u00e1ncer<\/p>\n<p>I\u00f1aki Mart\u00edn-Subero<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Con acceso a las historias cl\u00ednicas anonimizadas, los investigadores correlacionaron la evoluci\u00f3n pasada del tumor con su agresividad. \u201cLos c\u00e1nceres cambian con el tiempo, lo que complica su tratamiento\u201d, explica Trevor Graham, director del Centro de Evoluci\u00f3n y C\u00e1ncer de Londres. \u201cDescubrimos que el crecimiento inicial del c\u00e1ncer determina c\u00f3mo evolucionar\u00e1 en el futuro, lo que nos permite predecir la progresi\u00f3n en cada paciente. Es un gran paso en el manejo personalizado de la enfermedad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mart\u00edn-Subero a\u00f1ade: \u201cEn el caso de la\u00a0leucemia linf\u00e1tica cr\u00f3nica, un tipo de c\u00e1ncer que no siempre requiere tratamiento inmediato, con este nuevo test logramos predecir cu\u00e1ndo la enfermedad necesitar\u00e1 ser tratada con a\u00f1os de antelaci\u00f3n\u201d.
