La arque\u00f3loga brit\u00e1nica Mary Leakey, famosa por sus descubrimientos en diversos yacimientos prehist\u00f3ricos de \u00c1frica, descubri\u00f3 en 1959 el cr\u00e1neo OH 5 de Paranthropus boisei, al que identific\u00f3 como perteneciente a una nueva especie de hom\u00ednido.<\/p>\n

Junto al cr\u00e1neo, hallado en Olduvai, el famoso valle de Tanzania conocido por sus importantes restos arqueol\u00f3gicos y f\u00f3siles de hom\u00ednidos, se encontraron artefactos de piedra, lo que llev\u00f3 a considerar a la especie durante mucho tiempo como \u201cel fabricante de herramientas m\u00e1s antiguo hasta la fecha\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, se desconoce si Paranthropus realmente confeccionaba o utilizaba herramientas, debido principalmente a la ausencia de huesos de la mano que pudieran atribuirse con seguridad a este g\u00e9nero.<\/p>\n

Un nuevo estudio, publicado en Nature, describe un conjunto de f\u00f3siles de mano y pie asociados de manera inequ\u00edvoca con el material craneodental de P. boisei, denominado KNM-ER 101000.<\/p>\n

\u201cEsta es la primera vez que se puede vincular con seguridad a Paranthropus boisei con huesos espec\u00edficos de manos y pies. La mano muestra que pod\u00eda formar agarres de precisi\u00f3n similares a los nuestros, al mismo tiempo que conservaba capacidades de agarre poderosas m\u00e1s parecidas a los de los gorilas. Adem\u00e1s, esta mano permite reconstruir la probable morfolog\u00eda de la mano del \u00faltimo ancestro com\u00fan de Homo y Paranthropus, sentando las bases para entender c\u00f3mo podr\u00eda haber sido la mano de los primeros miembros del g\u00e9nero Homo\u201d, dice a SINC Carrie Mongle, investigadora de la Universidad de Stony Brook (EE UU).<\/p>\n

Este hecho indica que P. boisei contaba con la fuerza necesaria para agarrar objetos y procesar alimentos con las manos. \u201cSu anatom\u00eda sugiere que habr\u00eda tenido las proporciones de los dedos necesarias para formar un agarre de precisi\u00f3n, una de las caracter\u00edsticas de las manos humanas que permite realizar actividades como fabricar herramientas\u201d, a\u00f1ade Mongle.<\/p>\n

Una especie b\u00edpeda<\/h2>\n

Los restos f\u00f3siles se confirmaron como Paranthropus boisei porque se encontraron asociado con dientes y fragmentos craneales, ambos con una anatom\u00eda muy \u00fanica de esta especie.<\/p>\n

Por otro lado, el an\u00e1lisis de las extremidades da tambi\u00e9n pistas sobre su locomoci\u00f3n y comportamiento: \u201cEl pie, con sus dedos cortos y arco transverso, sugiere que P. boisei habr\u00eda sido completamente b\u00edpedo. La fuerza en las manos parece converger en la morfolog\u00eda de los gorilas para obtener y procesar alimentos vegetales m\u00e1s duros, aunque no se puede descartar que estas habilidades de agarre tambi\u00e9n fueran \u00fatiles para trepar\u201d, asegura Mongle.<\/p>\n

Las caracter\u00edsticas de la mano respaldan un modelo en el que\u00a0Paranthropus\u00a0y\u00a0Homo\u00a0evolucionaron en estrategias diet\u00e9ticas divergentes<\/p>\n

Por tanto, estos descubrimientos sugieren que P. boisei pudo haber fabricado y utilizado herramientas en cierta medida, al tiempo que respaldan la idea de adaptaciones diet\u00e9ticas diferenciadas entre Paranthropus y Homo. Asimismo, ofrecen nuevas pistas sobre la evoluci\u00f3n de las manos de los hom\u00ednidos y su capacidad para interactuar con el entorno.<\/p>\n

\u201cLas caracter\u00edsticas de la mano respaldan un modelo en el que Paranthropus y Homo evolucionaron en estrategias diet\u00e9ticas divergentes en un entorno en el que coexisten varias especies al mismo tiempo y en el mismo espacio geogr\u00e1fico, permiti\u00e9ndoles subsistir como especialistas ecol\u00f3gicos y generalistas, respectivamente\u201d.<\/p>\n
