Esta &#8216;bomba de carbono&#8217; ayuda a regular el clima de la Tierra e influye en todo, desde la qu\u00edmica oce\u00e1nica hasta el registro de restos f\u00f3siles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abLas conchas del plancton son diminutas, pero juntas moldean la qu\u00edmica de nuestros oc\u00e9anos y el clima de nuestro planeta\u00bb, afirma Patrizia Ziveri, profesora de investigaci\u00f3n ICREA en el ICTA-UAB y autora principal del estudio que publica Science sobre c\u00f3mo\u00a0estos organismos est\u00e1n representados de forma excesivamente simplificada en los modelos clim\u00e1ticos que se utilizan para predecir el futuro de nuestro planeta.\u00a0\u00abAl dejarlas fuera de los modelos clim\u00e1ticos, corremos el riesgo de pasar por alto procesos fundamentales que determinan c\u00f3mo responde el sistema terrestre al cambio clim\u00e1tico\u00bb, contin\u00faa.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Las conchas del plancton son diminutas, pero juntas moldean la qu\u00edmica de nuestros oc\u00e9anos y el clima de nuestro planeta<\/p>\n<p>Patrizia Ziveri, profesora de investigaci\u00f3n ICREA en el ICTA-UAB<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, como muestran los autores, gran parte de este CaCO\u2083 nunca llega al lecho marino. En su lugar, una gran fracci\u00f3n se disuelve en el oc\u00e9ano superior, en un proceso conocido como disoluci\u00f3n somera. La disoluci\u00f3n somera, impulsada por interacciones biol\u00f3gicas como la depredaci\u00f3n, la agregaci\u00f3n de part\u00edculas y la respiraci\u00f3n microbiana, altera profundamente la qu\u00edmica del oc\u00e9ano. No obstante, est\u00e1 mayoritariamente ausente de los principales modelos del sistema terrestre, como el CMIP6, que sustentan las evaluaciones clim\u00e1ticas globales.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>El destino del carbono en el oc\u00e9ano<\/h2>\n<p>El estudio destaca los rasgos \u00fanicos de los diferentes grupos de plancton calcificador, que determinan su distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica, su funci\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica y sus vulnerabilidades. Los cocolit\u00f3foros, principales productores de CaCO\u2083, son especialmente sensibles a la acidificaci\u00f3n, ya que no son capaces de eliminar la acidez de sus c\u00e9lulas.<\/p>\n<p>Los foramin\u00edferos y los pter\u00f3podos s\u00ed son capaces, pero deben hacer frente a presiones distintas, como la p\u00e9rdida de ox\u00edgeno o el calentamiento de las aguas. En conjunto, estos grupos determinan el destino del carbono en el oc\u00e9ano. Ignorar su diversidad implica correr el riesgo de simplificar en exceso c\u00f3mo responde el oc\u00e9ano a los factores de estr\u00e9s clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Si ignoramos a los organismos m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os del oc\u00e9ano, podr\u00edamos pasar por alto din\u00e1micas clim\u00e1ticas importantes<\/p>\n<p>Patrizia Ziveri<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>El art\u00edculo hace un llamamiento urgente a cuantificar mejor la producci\u00f3n, disoluci\u00f3n y exportaci\u00f3n espec\u00edficas por grupo de CaCO\u2083, e incorporar estas din\u00e1micas en los modelos clim\u00e1ticos.
