Un equipo internacional encabezado por Baptiste Chide,\u00a0investigador del Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan\u00e9tologie (Francia),\u00a0ha identificado se\u00f1ales ac\u00fasticas y el\u00e9ctricas compatibles con descargas durante episodios de viento y levantamiento de polvo en el cr\u00e1ter Jezero, donde opera el rover Perseverance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEsto constituye una evidencia de actividad el\u00e9ctrica atmosf\u00e9rica en Marte\u201d, afirma Chide, autor principal de un estudio que ha contado con participaci\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola, concretamente, de la Universidad del Pa\u00eds Vasco,\u00a0 el Instituto Nacional de T\u00e9cnica Aeroespacial (INTA) y el Centro de Astrobiolog\u00eda INTA-CSIC. Hasta ahora, la electrificaci\u00f3n marciana hab\u00eda sido una hip\u00f3tesis recurrente ligada a la abundancia de tormentas de polvo, pero nunca se hab\u00eda detectado directamente.<\/p>\n<p>El equipo analiz\u00f3\u00a028 horas de grabaciones del micr\u00f3fono de\u00a0Perseverance\u00a0obtenidas durante dos a\u00f1os marcianos, equivalentes a casi cuatro a\u00f1os terrestres<\/p>\n<p>El equipo analiz\u00f3 28 horas de grabaciones del micr\u00f3fono de Perseverance obtenidas durante dos a\u00f1os marcianos, equivalentes a casi cuatro a\u00f1os terrestres. En ellas identificaron 55 eventos el\u00e9ctricos. \u201cLos resultados muestran que las descargas se correlacionan m\u00e1s con actividades convectivas localizadas\u00a0asociadas al levantamiento de polvo o arena, como diablos de polvo o frentes de tormentas, que con los periodos de mayor opacidad atmosf\u00e9rica\u201d, explica Chide. Esto debilita la idea de que los campos el\u00e9ctricos se intensifican autom\u00e1ticamente en las zonas donde la atm\u00f3sfera es m\u00e1s turbia.<\/p>\n<p>Dos de los eventos se registraron durante los \u00fanicos encuentros cercanos del rover con diablos de polvo, y ambos generaron descargas. Seg\u00fan los autores, \u201cdiablos de polvo con par\u00e1metros similares deber\u00edan ser tambi\u00e9n fuentes de descargas de energ\u00eda comparable\u201d. A partir de estas observaciones, el equipo estima que la energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica total generada por estos remolinos en la regi\u00f3n de Jezero puede variar entre 1 y 105 microjulios por kil\u00f3metro cuadrado y por sol, dependiendo de la intensidad y la frecuencia de los v\u00f3rtices.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfDe d\u00f3nde procede la electricidad?<\/h2>\n<p>El estudio tambi\u00e9n sugiere que los frentes activos de las tormentas de polvo \u2014miles de ellos cada a\u00f1o en Marte\u2014 podr\u00edan ser responsables de la mayor parte de la electricidad atmosf\u00e9rica del planeta. \u201cLos frentes de tormenta probablemente dominan el presupuesto el\u00e9ctrico global de Marte\u201d, indica el art\u00edculo.<\/p>\n<p>Las descargas el\u00e9ctricas no solo afectan al polvo en suspensi\u00f3n: influyen en la din\u00e1mica atmosf\u00e9rica y en la qu\u00edmica superficial del planeta. \u201cLos campos el\u00e9ctricos\u00a0reducen la velocidad de fricci\u00f3n necesaria para levantar part\u00edculas, lo que realimenta positivamente el levantamiento de polvo y afecta al ciclo global del polvo y al clima\u201d, se\u00f1alan los autores. Adem\u00e1s, la electrificaci\u00f3n favorece la producci\u00f3n de oxidantes como el per\u00f3xido de hidr\u00f3geno y podr\u00eda sostener el ciclo del cloro en Marte, factores que condicionan la preservaci\u00f3n de compuestos org\u00e1nicos y la posible habitabilidad del entorno.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Un mejor conocimiento de estas descargas ayudar\u00e1 a proteger a los robots y astronautas<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de su inter\u00e9s cient\u00edfico, estas descargas podr\u00edan suponer un riesgo para futuros exploradores. \u201cUn mejor conocimiento de estas descargas ayudar\u00e1 a proteger a los robots y astronautas\u201d, advierte el equipo. En el pasado, fen\u00f3menos el\u00e9ctricos han sido propuestos como una posible causa de fallos en misiones como la sovi\u00e9tica Mars 3, que dej\u00f3 de transmitir tras unos segundos en plena tormenta de polvo.<\/p>\n<p>El hallazgo reabre un campo entero de investigaci\u00f3n sobre la electrificaci\u00f3n marciana. \u201cEste estudio activa de nuevo la necesidad de contar con instrumentos dedicados que midan la actividad el\u00e9ctrica in situ, as\u00ed como de desarrollar nuevos modelos atmosf\u00e9ricos que incorporen estos fen\u00f3menos y sus consecuencias\u201d, concluye Chide.
