Un equipo internacional ha dado a conocer un esqueleto excepcionalmente bien conservado de Homo habilis, con una antig\u00fcedad de m\u00e1s de 2 millones de a\u00f1os. El f\u00f3sil, designado como KNM-ER 64061, fue recuperado en East Turkana, en el norte de Kenia, y constituye la evidencia postcraneal m\u00e1s completa de Homo habilis conocida hasta la fecha.<\/p>\n

Este hallazgo, publicado en Anatomical Record<\/a>, ha contado con la participaci\u00f3n del\u00a0Institut Catal\u00e0 de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP-CERCA), y aporta evidencias clave para comprender la biolog\u00eda y la evoluci\u00f3n de los primeros humanos.<\/p>\n

El nuevo esqueleto descrito, datado entre 2,02 y 2,06 millones de a\u00f1os, incluye ambas clav\u00edculas, fragmentos de esc\u00e1pula, huesos del brazo y antebrazo, partes de la pelvis y del sacro. Adem\u00e1s, est\u00e1 asociado a un conjunto casi completo de dientes mandibulares, lo que permiti\u00f3 asignar con seguridad todos los huesos a un mismo individuo y a la especie Homo habilis.<\/p>\n

Hasta ahora solo se hab\u00edan identificado unos pocos individuos con huesos claramente asociados a restos dentarios diagn\u00f3sticos. \u201cDe hecho, solo se conocen otros tres esqueletos parciales muy fragmentarios e incompletos de esta especie tan importante\u201d, explica\u00a0Fred Grine, autor principal del estudio e investigador de la Stony Brook University (EE UU).<\/p>\n

Los huesos fueron descubiertos en 2012 durante una campa\u00f1a dirigida por\u00a0Meave Leakey en East Turkana. Posteriormente se recuperaron fragmentos adicionales que hubo que reorganizar como un rompecabezas antes de iniciar los an\u00e1lisis morfol\u00f3gicos.<\/p>\n

Cambios adaptativos clave<\/h2>\n

Entre los primeros homininos y la aparici\u00f3n de Homo erectus se produjeron cambios adaptativos clave. Los an\u00e1lisis de KNM-ER 64061 muestran similitudes con Homo erectus y especies posteriores, pero tambi\u00e9n diferencias: el individuo era m\u00e1s bajo, menos robusto y ten\u00eda brazos proporcionalmente m\u00e1s largos y fuertes. Med\u00eda unos 160 cent\u00edmetros y pesaba entre 30,7 y 32,7 kilos. El antebrazo era m\u00e1s largo en relaci\u00f3n con el brazo que en Homo erectus, una caracter\u00edstica que lo conecta con australopitecos como Australopithecus afarensis.<\/p>\n

Los an\u00e1lisis muestran similitudes con\u00a0\u2018Homo erectus\u2019\u00a0y especies posteriores, pero tambi\u00e9n diferencias: el individuo era m\u00e1s bajo, menos robusto y ten\u00eda brazos proporcionalmente m\u00e1s largos y fuertes. Los huesos del hombro y del brazo presentan corticales gruesas, similares a las de los australopitecos y otros f\u00f3siles tempranos del g\u00e9nero Homo. Estas caracter\u00edsticas podr\u00edan reflejar adaptaciones a un estilo de vida distinto al de Homo erectus. \u201cLos brazos de Homo habilis est\u00e1n cada vez mejor documentados, y KNM-ER 64061 confirma que eran bastante largos y robustos. Lo que sigue siendo un enigma son las extremidades inferiores\u201d, a\u00f1ade Hammond.<\/p>\n

El estudio fue liderado inicialmente por Bill Jungers, cuya labor pionera result\u00f3 decisiva para avanzar en la comprensi\u00f3n de la anatom\u00eda humana primitiva. Jungers falleci\u00f3 durante el desarrollo del proyecto, pero sus aportaciones siguen siendo centrales en el an\u00e1lisis de este f\u00f3sil.<\/p>\n
