A diferencia de otros primates, el ser humano posee un pene proporcionalmente grande en relaci\u00f3n con su tama\u00f1o corporal, un hecho que ha intrigado durante d\u00e9cadas a los bi\u00f3logos evolutivos. Ahora, una investigaci\u00f3n liderada por la Universidad de Australia Occidental sugiere que este rasgo no solo influye en la elecci\u00f3n de pareja por parte de las mujeres, sino tambi\u00e9n en c\u00f3mo los hombres eval\u00faan la amenaza que representan sus rivales.<\/p>\n

El estudio, publicado esta semana en la revista PLOS Biology, analiz\u00f3 las respuestas de m\u00e1s de 600 hombres y 200 mujeres ante figuras masculinas generadas por ordenador con variaciones en altura, forma corporal (relaci\u00f3n hombro-cadera) y tama\u00f1o del pene.<\/p>\n

Atracci\u00f3n vs. Intimidaci\u00f3n<\/h2>\n

Los resultados muestran una coincidencia parcial entre sexos: ambos consideran que una mayor estatura, una silueta en forma de V\u00a0(hombros anchos) y un pene m\u00e1s grande son rasgos m\u00e1s atractivos o imponentes. Sin embargo, el estudio detect\u00f3 un matiz psicol\u00f3gico clave en la percepci\u00f3n masculina.<\/p>\n

En el caso de las mujeres, el atractivo ten\u00eda\u00a0un l\u00edmite claro: m\u00e1s altura, m\u00e1s m\u00fasculos o un pene mayor dejaban de sumar puntos a partir de cierto nivel. Los hombres, en cambio, percibieron de forma sistem\u00e1tica a las figuras con rasgos m\u00e1s exagerados como rivales m\u00e1s peligrosos.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLos hombres calificaron a los rivales con penes m\u00e1s grandes como m\u00e1s amenazadores f\u00edsicamente y sexualmente competitivos\u201d, explica Upama Aich, autora principal de la investigaci\u00f3n. Esto sugiere que los varones tienden a sobreestimar la importancia que las mujeres otorgan a estas caracter\u00edsticas f\u00edsicas.<\/p>\n

Un ornamento evolutivo<\/h2>\n

Desde una perspectiva evolutiva, el estudio plantea que, antes de la invenci\u00f3n de la ropa, el pene era un rasgo prominente que serv\u00eda como se\u00f1al visual. Los investigadores concluyen que, si bien el tama\u00f1o influye en la percepci\u00f3n de la capacidad de lucha (posiblemente como indicador de niveles de testosterona), su evoluci\u00f3n ha estado m\u00e1s fuertemente impulsada por la selecci\u00f3n sexual femenina.<\/p>\n

El tama\u00f1o del pene evolucion\u00f3 sobre todo como ornamento sexual para atraer a las mujeres, m\u00e1s que como se\u00f1al de estatus frente a otros hombres<\/p>\n

Michael D. Jennions, coautor del trabajo, se\u00f1ala que aunque la funci\u00f3n principal del \u00f3rgano es la transferencia de esperma, su tama\u00f1o inusual evolucion\u00f3 m\u00e1s como un \u201cornamento sexual\u201d para atraer a las hembras que como una simple \u201cinsignia de estatus\u201d para intimidar a otros machos, a pesar de que hoy cumpla ambas funciones en el imaginario social y biol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n

No obstante, la estatura y la forma del cuerpo (hombros anchos) siguen siendo factores m\u00e1s determinantes que el tama\u00f1o genital cuando los hombres eval\u00faan la peligrosidad de un oponente en una pelea.<\/p>\n
