Los estudios han demostrado que existe una relaci\u00f3n entre el consumo de alcohol y un mayor riesgo de c\u00e1ncer colorrectal. Un nuevo trabajo revela ahora que un mayor consumo de alcohol a lo largo de la vida tambi\u00e9n se asocia con un mayor riesgo, especialmente de c\u00e1ncer rectal, y que dejar de beber puede reducir el riesgo.<\/p>\n

En el estudio\u00a0se analizaron 1 679 casos de c\u00e1ncer colorrectal entre 88 092 participantes durante 20 a\u00f1os de seguimiento<\/p>\n

Los resultados de la investigaci\u00f3n, liderada por un grupo de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de EE UU han sido publicados en la revista CANCER<\/a>, de la Sociedad Americana contra el C\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

El grupo investigador analiz\u00f3 los datos de adultos estadounidenses inscritos en el ensayo de detecci\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer de pr\u00f3stata, pulm\u00f3n, colorrectal y ovario (PLCO) del Instituto Nacional del C\u00e1ncer (NCI) que no ten\u00edan c\u00e1ncer al inicio del estudio. As\u00ed, observaron que se produjeron 1 679 casos de c\u00e1ncer colorrectal entre 88 092 participantes durante 20 a\u00f1os de seguimiento.<\/p>\n

Los bebedores con un consumo medio de alcohol a lo largo de la vida de 14 o m\u00e1s bebidas por semana y que segu\u00edan bebiendo ten\u00edan un riesgo un 25 % mayor de desarrollar c\u00e1ncer colorrectal y un 95 % mayor de desarrollar c\u00e1ncer rectal, en comparaci\u00f3n con aquellos con un consumo medio de alcohol a lo largo de la vida de menos de una bebida por semana.<\/p>\n

El consumo excesivo durante la edad adulta se asoci\u00f3 con un riesgo un 91 % mayor de c\u00e1ncer colorrectal en comparaci\u00f3n con el consumo ligero constante<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, no se observaron indicios de un aumento del riesgo de c\u00e1ncer colorrectal entre los antiguos bebedores, y estos ten\u00edan menos probabilidades de desarrollar tumores colorrectales no cancerosos, o adenomas (que pueden llegar a ser cancerosos), que los bebedores actuales con un promedio de menos de una bebida por semana. Seg\u00fan los autores, los resultados sugieren que dejar de beber alcohol puede reducir los riesgos de sufrir estas enfermedades, aunque reconocen que los datos eran limitados.<\/p>\n

La asociaci\u00f3n entre el consumo de alcohol y el aumento de los riesgos observados en este y otros estudios podr\u00eda explicarse por los carcin\u00f3genos producidos por el metabolismo del alcohol o los efectos del alcohol en los microbios intestinales. Los autores recalcan que se necesitan estudios adicionales para comprobar si estos mecanismos est\u00e1n involucrados.<\/p>\n

\u201cNuestro estudio es uno de los primeros en explorar c\u00f3mo el consumo de alcohol a lo largo de la vida se relaciona con el riesgo de adenoma colorrectal y c\u00e1ncer colorrectal. Aunque los datos sobre los antiguos bebedores eran escasos, nos anim\u00f3 ver que su riesgo puede volver a ser el de los bebedores moderados\u201d, afirm\u00f3 la coautora principal Erikka Loftfield, del NCI, que forma parte de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud.<\/p>\n
