Cient\u00edficos del Centro Nacional de Investigaci\u00f3n Cient\u00edfica de Francia (CNRS) y sus socios internacionales han descubierto en China la piel fosilizada de un iguanodonte juvenil excepcionalmente bien conservado. El hallazgo ha permitido estudiar tejidos blandos preservados durante 125 millones de a\u00f1os, un caso muy poco com\u00fan en el registro f\u00f3sil.<\/p>\n

Documentado desde hace 200 a\u00f1os, el grupo Iguanodontia se ampl\u00eda con el descubrimiento de una especie completamente nueva, la primera conocida por presentar espinas con propiedades nunca observadas en dinosaurios.<\/p>\n

Mediante escaneos de rayos X y secciones histol\u00f3gicas de alta resoluci\u00f3n, los investigadores identificaron c\u00e9lulas de la piel que revelan la presencia de espinas cut\u00e1neas huecas que cubr\u00edan gran parte del cuerpo del animal.<\/p>\n

Espinas con m\u00faltiples funciones<\/h2>\n

La nueva especie ha sido bautizada como Haolong dongi, en honor a Dong Zhiming, pionero de la paleontolog\u00eda china. Este dinosaurio espinoso era herb\u00edvoro y viv\u00eda bajo la presi\u00f3n de depredaci\u00f3n de peque\u00f1os dinosaurios carn\u00edvoros.<\/p>\n

Comparables en su\u00a0funci\u00f3n disuasoria a las de los puercoespines, sus ap\u00e9ndices representan una innovaci\u00f3n evolutiva \u00fanica. Tambi\u00e9n pudieron haber desempe\u00f1ado un papel en la termorregulaci\u00f3n o en la percepci\u00f3n sensorial.<\/p>\n

Comparables en su\u00a0funci\u00f3n disuasoria a las de los puercoespines, sus ap\u00e9ndices representan una innovaci\u00f3n evolutiva \u00fanica.<\/p>\n

Hasta ahora, no exist\u00edan pruebas que atestiguaran la presencia de tales espinas en los dinosaurios. Dado que el ejemplar de Haolong dongi es juvenil, queda por determinar si estas espinas tambi\u00e9n estaban presentes en los adultos.<\/p>\n
