Un estudio del Instituto de Neurociencias (IN), centro mixto del CSIC)y la Universidad Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez de Elche (UMH), revela que estas c\u00e9lulas pueden identificarse ya en el tumor primario.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A partir de un modelo de rat\u00f3n y datos de pacientes, el trabajo publicado en\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-026-70242-4\" target=\"_blank\">Nature Communications<\/a>\u00a0muestra una poblaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas en el borde invasivo del tumor capaz de invadir y dividirse o de entrar en letargo. El gen Prrx1 es el encargado de regular este equilibrio, que determina la formaci\u00f3n de nuevos focos tumorales en otros \u00f3rganos, las temidas met\u00e1stasis.<\/p>\n<p>El potencial de diseminaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 determinado en un grupo de c\u00e9lulas presentes en el tumor que origina el c\u00e1ncer. Estas c\u00e9lulas adoptan un estado altamente metast\u00e1sico coordinado por el gen Prrx1<\/p>\n<p>Este nuevo estudio desarrollado por el laboratorio de Plasticidad Celular en Desarrollo y Enfermedad, dirigido por\u00a0\u00c1ngela Nieto, demuestra que la capacidad metast\u00e1tica no surge por azar ni depende \u00fanicamente del microambiente del \u00f3rgano de destino. Por el contrario, el potencial metast\u00e1sico ya est\u00e1 determinado en un conjunto de c\u00e9lulas presentes en el tumor que origina el c\u00e1ncer. Estas c\u00e9lulas adoptan un estado altamente metast\u00e1sico coordinado por un factor clave: el gen Prrx1.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan explica\u00a0Ra\u00fal Jim\u00e9nez Casta\u00f1o, primer autor del estudio, el gen Prrx1 act\u00faa como un aut\u00e9ntico regulador maestro del comportamiento tumoral: \u201cRecientemente descubrimos que Prrx1 era crucial para la diseminaci\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer y, gracias a este trabajo, ahora sabemos que no solo activa los programas que permiten a las c\u00e9lulas desprenderse del tumor primario, sino que tambi\u00e9n controla su capacidad de dividirse y formar met\u00e1stasis o, por el contrario, entrar en un estado de letargo que puede durar a\u00f1os\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLo m\u00e1s llamativo es que la cantidad de Prrx1 determina el efecto sobre las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas\u201d, a\u00f1ade Nieto. Este hallazgo ayuda a explicar una paradoja observada en muchos tumores: las c\u00e9lulas muy invasivas no siempre generan met\u00e1stasis, y las m\u00e1s proliferativas tampoco suelen diseminarse.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lo m\u00e1s llamativo es que la cantidad de Prrx1 determina el efecto sobre las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1ngela Nieto (Instituto de Neurociencias)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSin Prrx1, las c\u00e9lulas no se diseminan; con niveles muy altos, se diseminan masivamente, pero pierden la capacidad de anidar y crecer en otros \u00f3rganos. S\u00f3lo cuando presentan niveles intermedios alcanzan un equilibrio \u00f3ptimo entre movilidad y crecimiento\u201d, explica la experta. El procesamiento y an\u00e1lisis de los datos generados a partir de miles de c\u00e9lulas estuvo liderado por el experto en bioinform\u00e1tica del equipo de Nieto, el investigador\u00a0Nitin Narwade.<\/p>\n<p>Adem\u00e1s, en colaboraci\u00f3n con la catedr\u00e1tica\u00a0Gema Moreno Bueno, de la\u00a0Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid y la\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n MD Anderson Cancer Center Espa\u00f1a, los investigadores analizaron muestras de pacientes con c\u00e1ncer de mama y detectaron patrones similares de expresi\u00f3n de\u00a0Prrx1, lo que sugiere que el mecanismo descrito podr\u00eda tener una relevancia directa en la clasificaci\u00f3n y el pron\u00f3stico cl\u00ednico.<\/p>\n<p>Los investigadores analizaron muestras de pacientes con c\u00e1ncer de mama y detectaron patrones similares de expresi\u00f3n de\u00a0Prrx1<\/p>\n<p>En conjunto, los resultados aportan una nueva perspectiva sobre el origen del potencial metast\u00e1tico y abren la puerta al desarrollo de estrategias destinadas a impedir que las c\u00e9lulas tumorales alcancen ese estado particularmente peligroso.
