Este fen\u00f3meno no es aislado: ya en 2010, la erupci\u00f3n del Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull en Islandia paraliz\u00f3 el espacio a\u00e9reo europeo, recordando al mundo que los gigantes de fuego siguen siendo impredecibles.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la ciencia ha mejorado dr\u00e1sticamente su capacidad para detectar se\u00f1ales precursoras, un nuevo estudio publicado este jueves en la revista Science advierte de que todav\u00eda existen importantes \u201cpuntos ciegos\u201d. La investigaci\u00f3n, firmada por Magn\u00fas T. Gudmundsson (Universidad de Islandia) y Christopher J. En declaraciones a SINC, los autores comparan nuestra visi\u00f3n actual de los volcanes con una observaci\u00f3n a larga distancia: \u201cIncluso con los datos de mayor calidad que podemos obtener hoy, solo tenemos una imagen aproximada del sistema. No podemos saber cu\u00e1nto magma hay disponible; es un poco como ver un coche conduciendo por una carretera a muchos kil\u00f3metros de distancia: lo ves, pero no puedes decir su tama\u00f1o o su tipo\u201d, explican.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Incluso con los datos de mayor calidad que podemos obtener hoy, solo tenemos una imagen aproximada del sistema<\/p>\n<p>Magn\u00fas Gudmundsson, Universidad de Islandia<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan Gudmundsson y Bean, si existen sistemas de vigilancia, los precursores (se\u00edsmos o deformaci\u00f3n del terreno) se detectan casi siempre, aunque sea apenas unas horas antes. El verdadero reto es la complejidad del sistema. \u201cLa respuesta es a menudo no lineal, lo que hace virtualmente imposible predecir el resultado preciso: el momento exacto, el tama\u00f1o o la duraci\u00f3n. Aunque estos volcanes emiten se\u00f1ales, los autores advierten de que los signos visibles (como el vapor) no ocurren en la mayor\u00eda de los casos, por lo que la instrumentaci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica es vital. Sin embargo, no est\u00e1 claro que el problema se resuelva solo con m\u00e1s sensores.<\/p>\n<p>La mayor\u00eda de las grandes erupciones se originan en \u201csistemas cerrados\u201d, donde los conductos est\u00e1n sellados y la presi\u00f3n aumenta internamente hasta el colapso<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParte de la incertidumbre puede estar relacionada con la forma en que los diferentes componentes del sistema interact\u00faan de forma no lineal\u201d, se\u00f1alan.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfEs la IA la soluci\u00f3n?<\/h2>\n<p>Para salvar estas brechas, el estudio propone una estrategia h\u00edbrida que combine modelos f\u00edsicos con aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico (machine learning). Sin embargo, los investigadores aclaran que la tecnolog\u00eda no es una \u201cvarita m\u00e1gica\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa IA es una herramienta \u00fatil para encontrar tendencias en grandes conjuntos de datos y ser\u00e1 muy valiosa a medida que reunamos m\u00e1s datos sobre ciclos eruptivos, pero no es un reemplazo para la f\u00edsica, la qu\u00edmica o el mapeo geol\u00f3gico\u201d, afirman los expertos a SINC.<\/p>\n<p>Existe, adem\u00e1s, un problema de base para entrenar a estas inteligencias: la falta de ejemplos. \u201cLos eventos m\u00e1s grandes son raros. No tenemos datos sobre los precursores de tales eventos y, por lo tanto, no hay datos con los que entrenar los sistemas de IA\u201d.
