La Fundaci\u00f3n Lilly ha concedido los Premios de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica 2026 a la doctora Mar\u00eda Victoria Mateos, en la categor\u00eda cl\u00ednica, y al profesor Ignacio Melero, en la categor\u00eda precl\u00ednica, en reconocimiento a sus contribuciones en la transformaci\u00f3n del abordaje del c\u00e1ncer a trav\u00e9s de la investigaci\u00f3n biom\u00e9dica y la inmunoterapia.<\/p>\n

En el \u00e1mbito cl\u00ednico, la doctora Mar\u00eda Victoria Mateos, ha sido galardonada por sus investigaciones en mieloma m\u00faltiple, una enfermedad en la que, seg\u00fan los datos actuales, entre el 60% y el 75% de los pacientes logran respuestas duraderas y control prolongado de la enfermedad gracias a los avances terap\u00e9uticos.<\/p>\n

Mar\u00eda Victoria Mateos, ha sido galardonada por sus investigaciones en mieloma m\u00faltiple y\u00a0Ignacio Melero\u00a0por sus contribuciones al desarrollo de estrategias de inmunoterapia\u00a0<\/p>\n

Actualmente, Mateos\u00a0es jefa de la Unidad de Hematolog\u00eda del Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca, profesora titular de la Universidad de Salamanca y presidenta de la Sociedad Espa\u00f1ola de Hematolog\u00eda y Hemoterapia.<\/p>\n

La investigadora ha liderado estudios que han contribuido a transformar el tratamiento del mieloma m\u00faltiple, mejorando la supervivencia y la calidad de vida de los pacientes, as\u00ed como abriendo nuevas v\u00edas para la detecci\u00f3n precoz, la personalizaci\u00f3n de los tratamientos y el desarrollo de estrategias terap\u00e9uticas con potencial curativo.<\/p>\n

Avances en mieloma m\u00faltiple<\/h2>\n

Entre sus l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n destaca tambi\u00e9n el estudio del mieloma m\u00faltiple asintom\u00e1tico, una fase temprana de la enfermedad en la que a\u00fan no existen s\u00edntomas, en la que ha demostrado que intervenir antes de la aparici\u00f3n de manifestaciones cl\u00ednicas puede retrasar la progresi\u00f3n de la enfermedad y abrir la puerta a estrategias con potencial curativo.<\/p>\n

En este contexto, la investigaci\u00f3n ha impulsado el uso de estrategias que permiten respuestas cada vez m\u00e1s profundas y duraderas.<\/p>\n

Entre sus contribuciones destaca el desarrollo de t\u00e9cnicas para evaluar la enfermedad m\u00ednima residual en sangre perif\u00e9rica mediante espectrometr\u00eda de masas, as\u00ed como su participaci\u00f3n en la incorporaci\u00f3n de este marcador como objetivo primario en ensayos cl\u00ednicos.<\/p>\n

Inmunoterapia antitumoral<\/h2>\n

En la categor\u00eda precl\u00ednica, el galard\u00f3n ha sido concedido al profesor Ignacio Melero, por sus contribuciones al desarrollo de estrategias de inmunoterapia capaces de activar el sistema inmunitario frente a los tumores.<\/p>\n

Melero es catedr\u00e1tico de Inmunolog\u00eda de la Universidad de Navarra y codirector de Inmunolog\u00eda e Inmunoterapia en el Cima y la Cl\u00ednica Universidad de Navarra.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sus investigaciones se centran en avanzar hacia inmunoterapias combinadas cada vez m\u00e1s tempranas, personalizadas y basadas en la biotecnolog\u00eda, con el objetivo de mejorar la eficacia frente a distintos tipos de c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

El investigador ha sido pionero en el desarrollo de estrategias que no solo bloquean los frenos del sistema inmunitario, sino que tambi\u00e9n buscan activar sus mecanismos de respuesta, explorando nuevas v\u00edas para potenciar la acci\u00f3n de las defensas frente a los tumores.<\/p>\n

Melero ha se\u00f1alado que \u201cbuscamos estrategias de inmunoterapia combinada cada vez m\u00e1s tempranas, personalizadas y basadas en avances de la biotecnolog\u00eda para ense\u00f1ar al sistema inmunitario a combatir el c\u00e1ncer\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u00abA menudo se habla de quitar los frenos al sistema inmunitario, pero nosotros llevamos muchos a\u00f1os estudiando tambi\u00e9n c\u00f3mo pisar el acelerador\u00bb, a\u00f1ade.<\/p>\n

El investigador tambi\u00e9n prev\u00e9 un aumento significativo del impacto de estas terapias en los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os, al afirmar que \u201cdentro de 10 a\u00f1os veremos que donde ahora beneficiamos al 30% de los pacientes, estaremos beneficiando a entre el 50 % y el 70 %\u201d.<\/p>\n
