Un estudio liderado por profesionales del Hospital Cl\u00ednic-IDIBAPS y de la Universidad de Yale (EE UU) ha revelado un mecanismo por el cual el cerebro es capaz de anticipar la llegada de los alimentos antes de su ingesta a partir de su percepci\u00f3n sensorial, como la vista o el olfato. Adem\u00e1s, han observado que cuando esta v\u00eda se altera, se producen cambios en la conducta alimentaria y en el metabolismo que pueden contribuir al desarrollo de diabetes y obesidad.<\/p>\n

El trabajo, publicado en la revista\u00a0Nature Metabolism<\/a>, est\u00e1 liderado por\u00a0Al\u00edcia Garcia\u00a0y\u00a0Marc Claret, del grupo de investigaci\u00f3n\u00a0Control neuronal del metabolismo\u00a0del IDIBAPS, y por\u00a0Marc Schneeberger, de la Yale School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

Tradicionalmente, el control de la ingesta alimentaria se ha considerado un proceso principalmente reactivo, regulado por se\u00f1ales que aparecen una vez los nutrientes ya han llegado al organismo. No obstante, estudios recientes han demostrado que el cerebro tambi\u00e9n puede activar respuestas anticipatorias al detectar alimentos a nivel visual y olfativo. Este nuevo trabajo identifica uno de los mecanismos moleculares que sustentan este fen\u00f3meno sensorial anticipatorio.<\/p>\n

Cambios en la respuesta hormonal<\/h2>\n

Para ello, el equipo investigador estudi\u00f3 en modelos animales el papel de las\u00a0neuronas POMC del hipot\u00e1lamo, implicadas en la regulaci\u00f3n de la energ\u00eda y la glucosa. En primer lugar, observaron que, ante la percepci\u00f3n sensorial de la comida, estas neuronas respond\u00edan movilizando sus\u00a0reservas de gluc\u00f3geno, una fuente de energ\u00eda clave para su funcionamiento. Sin embargo, mediante t\u00e9cnicas de edici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica, eliminaron el gluc\u00f3geno de estas neuronas, las cuales dejaban de responder a los est\u00edmulos sensoriales de los alimentos, como el olor o el aspecto.<\/p>\n

Esta alteraci\u00f3n se traduc\u00eda en cambios en la conducta alimentaria, as\u00ed como en una respuesta hormonal deficitaria antes de la ingesta, incluyendo una menor secreci\u00f3n de insulina anticipatoria.<\/p>\n

El equipo estudi\u00f3 en modelos animales el papel de las neuronas POMC del hipot\u00e1lamo, implicadas en la regulaci\u00f3n de la energ\u00eda y la glucosa<\/p>\n

Esto llevaba a los animales a desarrollar alteraciones metab\u00f3licas compatibles con un estado prediab\u00e9tico que, con el tiempo o con dietas hipercal\u00f3ricas, evolucionaba hacia obesidad y diabetes.<\/p>\n

Al\u00edcia Garcia, investigadora en el IDIBAPS y primera autora del art\u00edculo, afirma: \u201cHemos identificado el gluc\u00f3geno como un elemento esencial para que las neuronas perciban la comida y activen respuestas anticipatorias\u201d. Y a\u00f1ade: \u201cesta funci\u00f3n era desconocida hasta ahora y abre una nueva forma de entender c\u00f3mo el cerebro regula el metabolismo\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa mala percepci\u00f3n sensorial de los alimentos puede contribuir al desarrollo de enfermedades metab\u00f3licas, incluso antes de que se produzcan cambios visibles en la dieta o el peso corporal\u201d, afirma\u00a0Marc Claret, jefe de grupo de investigaci\u00f3n en el IDIBAPS y uno de los l\u00edderes del proyecto.<\/p>\n

A largo plazo, estos resultados podr\u00edan ayudar a dise\u00f1ar estrategias preventivas para la diabetes y la obesidad, centradas no solo en qu\u00e9 comemos, sino tambi\u00e9n en c\u00f3mo el cerebro percibe los alimentos antes de ingerirlos.<\/p>\n
