Las estrategias tradicionales, basadas en insecticidas o modificaciones gen\u00e9ticas, suelen toparse con problemas de resistencia y aceptaci\u00f3n p\u00fablica.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, un enfoque completamente diferente est\u00e1 emergiendo desde el plano microsc\u00f3pico. A trav\u00e9s de una serie de investigaciones, el cient\u00edfico ha descifrado los mecanismos por los cuales la microbiota manipula tanto la atracci\u00f3n que sienten los mosquitos por un cuerpo enfermo como la capacidad del propio insecto para albergar el virus y contagiarlo a un nuevo hospedador.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>El truco olfativo del virus en la piel<\/h2>\n<p>Uno de los hallazgos m\u00e1s sorprendentes del equipo de Zhu explica por qu\u00e9 los hu\u00e9spedes infectados resultan desproporcionadamente atractivos para los mosquitos en comparaci\u00f3n con los individuos sanos.<\/p>\n<p>Lejos de tratarse de una simple casualidad, los investigadores descubrieron que la infecci\u00f3n por flavivirus altera de manera dr\u00e1stica el entorno inmunitario de la piel del mam\u00edfero. En concreto, el virus suprime la producci\u00f3n de un p\u00e9ptido antimicrobiano llamado RELM\u03b1.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>El virus no actu\u00f3 solo, sino que explot\u00f3 una interacci\u00f3n entre la inmunidad del hu\u00e9sped, los microbios comensales y el comportamiento del vector<\/p>\n<p>Yibin Zhu, Universidad de Tsinghua<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Al debilitarse esta barrera defensiva, una bacteria comensal de la piel especializada en la producci\u00f3n de compuestos vol\u00e1tiles prolifera r\u00e1pidamente. Este microbio genera grandes cantidades de acetofenona, una sustancia qu\u00edmica que emana del cuerpo y que act\u00faa como un potente im\u00e1n olfativo para los mosquitos buscadores de sangre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl virus no actu\u00f3 solo, sino que explot\u00f3 una interacci\u00f3n entre la inmunidad del hu\u00e9sped, los microbios comensales y el comportamiento del vector\u201d, se\u00f1ala Zhu.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Bacterias aliadas contra pat\u00f3genos<\/h2>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n desvel\u00f3 la otra cara de la moneda: c\u00f3mo la microbiota puede convertirse en un aliado letal contra el virus dentro del propio mosquito. El mecanismo descubierto posee una elegancia biof\u00edsica asombrosa: tras succionar sangre, la bacteria secreta una enzima que acidifica prematuramente el intestino del mosquito.<\/p>\n<p>Dado que los flaviviruses necesitan de la acidez para activar los cambios estructurales en sus prote\u00ednas de envoltura y entrar en las c\u00e9lulas epiteliales, sufrir este ba\u00f1o \u00e1cido antes de tiempo inactiva los virus de forma irreversible. El pat\u00f3geno queda completamente neutralizado antes de poder establecerse en el vector.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Hacia un control biol\u00f3gico sin alterar el ecosistema<\/h2>\n<p>Los an\u00e1lisis de campo complementarios indicaron que la bacteria Rosenbergiella_YN46 es mucho m\u00e1s abundante en regiones geogr\u00e1ficas que registran de forma natural una menor incidencia de dengue. Adem\u00e1s, la presencia de este microbio protector no supone ning\u00fan coste biol\u00f3gico detectable para la supervivencia o aptitud del mosquito, lo que facilita enormemente su persistencia estable si se introduce en poblaciones naturales.<\/p>\n<p>La bacteria Rosenbergiella_YN46 es mucho m\u00e1s abundante en regiones geogr\u00e1ficas que registran de forma natural una menor incidencia de dengue<\/p>\n<p>Este cambio de paradigma invita a dise\u00f1ar herramientas de salud p\u00fablica basadas en el manejo microbiol\u00f3gico.
