Dentro de esa media \u201cse esconde un alarmante aumento en los \u00faltimos 10 a\u00f1os\u201d, indica la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA).<\/p>\n<p>La velocidad del deshielo aument\u00f3 un 36 % en la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, lo que supone un alarmante aumento, seg\u00fan la ESA<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecopilamos 233 estimaciones del cambio de masa de los glaciares regionales a partir de unos 450 colaboradores de datos organizados en 35 equipos de investigaci\u00f3n\u201d, explica Michael Zemp, de la Universidad de Z\u00farich y codirector del estudio.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Los vigilantes del los glaciares<\/h2>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n se realiz\u00f3 dentro del Ejercicio de Intercomparaci\u00f3n de Balances de Masa de Glaciares (Glambie), una iniciativa coordinada por el Servicio Mundial de Vigilancia de Glaciares (WGMS).<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados muestran que en el a\u00f1o 2000 los glaciares, excluyendo las capas de hielo de Groenlandia y la Ant\u00e1rtida, abarcaban 705.221 kil\u00f3metros cuadrados y conten\u00edan aproximadamente 121.728 millones de toneladas de hielo. Desde entonces han perdido un 5 % de su volumen, con reducciones que var\u00edan entre un 2 % en las islas ant\u00e1rticas y subant\u00e1rticas y un 39 % en Europa Central.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Riesgo para ecosistemas y personas<\/h2>\n<p>Las consecuencias del retroceso glaciar afectan tanto a los ecosistemas como a las comunidades humanas. \u201cLos glaciares son recursos vitales de agua dulce, especialmente para las poblaciones de Asia Central y los Andes Centrales, donde dominan la escorrent\u00eda en estaciones c\u00e1lidas y secas\u201d, destaca In\u00e9s Dussaillant, investigadora de WGMS y coautora del estudio.<\/p>\n<p>La p\u00e9rdida de hielo tambi\u00e9n repercute en el aumento del nivel del mar. Actualmente, los glaciares son el segundo mayor contribuyente al ascenso del nivel del mar, despu\u00e9s de la expansi\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica de los oc\u00e9anos.
