Los resultados del trabajo se han publicado en\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1128\/aem.02282-24\" target=\"_blank\">Applied and Environmental Microbiology<\/a>, revista de la Sociedad Estadounidense de Microbiolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbordar la contaminaci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica no es solo una cuesti\u00f3n ambiental, sino una prioridad de salud p\u00fablica en la lucha contra las infecciones resistentes a los medicamentos\u201d, afirma\u00a0Neila Gross, autora principal del estudio y doctoranda en el laboratorio del profesor Muhammad Zaman en la universidad estadounidense.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quotebefore.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Abordar la contaminaci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica no es solo un tema ambiental, sino una prioridad de salud p\u00fablica en la lucha contra las infecciones resistentes\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Neila Gross, autora principal (Universidad de Boston)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/bundles\/app\/images\/quoteafter.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Con el aumento global del uso de pl\u00e1sticos, la contaminaci\u00f3n por micropl\u00e1sticos se ha vuelto omnipresente, especialmente en aguas residuales, que act\u00faan como un importante reservorio de estos materiales. Al mismo tiempo, la resistencia a los antimicrobianos est\u00e1 en ascenso en todo el mundo, con factores ambientales que juegan un papel clave. Los micropl\u00e1sticos son conocidos por albergar comunidades bacterianas en sus superficies, un fen\u00f3meno denominado &#8216;plastisfera&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>En el nuevo estudio, los investigadores analizaron la resistencia bacteriana a niveles cl\u00ednicamente relevantes y exploraron c\u00f3mo las caracter\u00edsticas de los micropl\u00e1sticos influyen en su desarrollo.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Cuatro antibi\u00f3ticos de uso frecuente<\/h2>\n<p>Para ello, utilizaron distintos tipos de pl\u00e1sticos\u00a0(poliestireno, empleado en\u00a0materiales de embalaje; polietileno, presente en\u00a0bolsas de pl\u00e1stico con cierre herm\u00e9tico; y polipropileno, utilizado en cajas, botellas y frascos) y diferentes tama\u00f1os (desde 0,5 mil\u00edmetros hasta 10 micr\u00f3metros, comparable a la escala de una bacteria). Luego, incubaron estos materiales con la\u00a0bacteria\u00a0Escherichia coli\u00a0durante 10 d\u00edas y cada 2 d\u00edas midieron la concentraci\u00f3n m\u00ednima inhibitoria (MIC), que indica cu\u00e1nta cantidad de antibi\u00f3tico es necesaria para eliminar la infecci\u00f3n. Analizaron la resistencia a cuatro antibi\u00f3ticos de uso frecuente: ampicilina, ciprofloxacino, doxiciclina y estreptomicina.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados mostraron que los micropl\u00e1sticos favorecieron el desarrollo de resistencia a m\u00faltiples antibi\u00f3ticos en\u00a0E. coli\u00a0en un periodo de entre 5 y 10 d\u00edas<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados mostraron que los micropl\u00e1sticos, independientemente de su tama\u00f1o y concentraci\u00f3n, favorecieron el desarrollo de resistencia a m\u00faltiples antibi\u00f3ticos en\u00a0E. coli\u00a0en un periodo de entre 5 y 10 d\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p>El estudio demostr\u00f3 que los micropl\u00e1sticos pueden potenciar el desarrollo de resistencia sin necesidad de antibi\u00f3ticos. \u201cEsto implica que los micropl\u00e1sticos aumentan significativamente el riesgo de que los antibi\u00f3ticos se vuelvan ineficaces contra diversas infecciones de gran impacto\u201d, explica Gross.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Resistencia inducida<\/h2>\n<p>Investigaciones previas se hab\u00edan centrado en la resistencia inducida por los antibi\u00f3ticos, sin considerar el papel de contaminantes ambientales como los micropl\u00e1sticos. Los estudios existentes hab\u00edan analizado principalmente factores como los genes de resistencia a los antibi\u00f3ticos (ARGs) y la formaci\u00f3n de biopel\u00edculas, pero no hab\u00edan evaluado el impacto directo en la resistencia a trav\u00e9s de la MIC.<\/p>\n<p>Los autores tambi\u00e9n encontraron que la resistencia inducida por los micropl\u00e1sticos y los antibi\u00f3ticos se manten\u00eda estable y medible, incluso despu\u00e9s de retirar los antibi\u00f3ticos y los micropl\u00e1sticos del entorno bacteriano.
